Everything is within walking distance: the beach, the river, the forest, the shops and the restaurants. Wilderness Beach stretches forever. You never need feel crowded, even at the height of the season. You can always find an expanse of beach with no one in sight.

Wilderness itself is a dear little hamlet situated in the heart of the Garden Route, along the south-western coast of South Africa. It is approximately four and a half hours from Cape Town and three hours from Port Elizabeth. The N2 highway between the two cities runs through Wilderness, so the surrounding towns, each with its unique attractions, are easily accessible:

  • Mossel Bay, 40 minutes from Wilderness, was where the early ships docked. It has interesting museums and you can visit the ancient milkwood which was used as a postbox for 16 th century travellers.
  • George, 15 minutes away, is the industrial hub of the area. It nestles against the Outeniqua Mountains. From there, access to the mountains is easy and you can travel along the early passes.
  • Oudtshoorn, 40 minutes over the spectacular Outeniqua Pass, was the capital of the ostrich feather industry at the beginning of the 20 th century. You can visit the ostrich farms and the Cango Caves, famous for their size and beauty.

Knysna, 40 minutes from Wilderness, is a charming town on the Knysna Lagoon. There is the Waterfront to visit and the famous Heads to admire.
